Take-A-Card Marketing By Kevin
Nunley
Many towns have a service that
places a small box of business cards on restaurant tables. Nestled
among the salt, pepper, and tabasco, the brightly coloured cards
make interesting browsing while customers wait for their orders
to arrive.
This is low-cost, low-tech
marketing at its best. The cards are small ads photocopied onto
a coloured sheet of paper and cut into 3"x2" squares.
One web designer has her information
printed on both sides of her card. Having lunch with several
business people, it caught my eye. "Hey, anybody need a web
designer?"
An accountant advertises his service to come to your home in
the evening and help you organize your chequebook or home business
records.
The ad copy on these cards is more like postcard copy than a
traditional business card. You can pack in a lot more information.
Start with a bold headline that communicates your best customer
benefit in two or three words. Follow up with quick-read bullets
of your features and the benefits they provide. Put your contact
info in bold big letters at the bottom.
Make Your Headline Powerful And L-O-N-G
By Dr. Kevin Nunley
Five times as many people read
the headline of an ad than read the copy. Make your headline
powerful, attention getting, and make sure it sells your product
or service. Anything less wastes most of the money you paid
for advertising.
Be sure to include your company
or brand name in the headline. Since most people read nothing
more than the headline, leaving your name out will insure 80%
never know who you are.
The best headlines promise the
customer a reward. "Use this product and get this benefit."
Flip through a magazine or newspaper and count the number of
ads that shout a benefit in their headline. Talk longer on your
cell phone for the same price, avoid the summer heat, escape
the boredom of everyday life.
Have your headline announce news
about your product or service. Headlines that proclaim news
are remembered by almost 25% more people.
Finally, make your headline L-O-N-G.
Ten word headlines sell far better than shorter headlines.
